At the height of the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) craze in the early 2010s, developers were rushing to get a slice of the pie after seeing the success of League of Legends and Dota 2.

Not one to miss out on the rise of esports and the MOBA market, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in partnership with Turbine to created a video game featuring iconic DC characters, Infinite Crisis.

While the title may have been a latecomer to the genre, Turbine was able to get a playable product into beta testing and eventually ship it live in a remarkable time. Gradually an esports scene began to form as well as a burgeoning community, but even with such a strong IP at hand, the game met its demise just 6 months after launch.

This is the story of the rise and fall of Infinite Crisis.

I would play it. one thing people did not understand is that the first wave of release of a game is basically a demo to see how it goes, but if people don't give the dev's a chance we will never see the actual product.

  2. League of Exploits says:

The dev team was obsessed with batman, we had 3 gotham maps, 3 versions of batman, joker. 2 versions of catwoman, and we had robin, harley quinn, poison ivy, several skins for gotham based characters… and after 1 year of community asking for… we had a very lame version of superman…
They could make a gotham based moba instead of say it was infinite crisis and 50% of the roster was gotham based characters

  3. Sabrina Garza says:

I loved Infinite Crisis! It was the first MOBA I ever played and it was so fun. I had no idea they shut it down so soon though haha. I actually stopped playing pretty soon after it launched because other players were jerks lol :”)

  4. DICE says:

sounds very stupid that they came out the gate with the multiverse stuff. You start with the iconic characters first and base versions of them first. Then you start adding in later characters. Especially if your trailer shows off the original versions first

  5. Mitrik Gaduk says:

I played the Beta a long ass time ago, no joke, I still have the installer and the game on my old PC. I played a bit of Joker, Flash and Nightmare Batman, only really played for probably 8 hours in total, but generally I toyed around with a couple character. I wasn't really into the MOBA genre, mainly due to item management and economy (HoTS was more my speed at the time, another game that has been poorly mismanaged), but I did have a lot of fun. I definitely saw the potential in the game, but I didn't really know what happened to it. I'm writing this prior to watching as I don't want to forgot my thought process as I'm currently eating.

The Dominion mode in this game was far superior to LoL's Dominion and most players loved it. Really the lack of marketing and the ranked push is what killed it and its a shame. This game was fire.

  7. superbad8008 says:

I thought I saw the “Stolen Powers” concept first from DC Universe Online. I remember you could choose from a pool of powers shared with existing characters to increase overall abilities. Thought it’s been years since I’ve been on DCUO.

I remember investing a lot of time in this game (IGN Saradominish, Catwoman main). I was shocked when the game closed down but in highsight, it was apparent, especially when they did testing on which map should stay open in the official release and they picked Coast City as its winner, even though some people, myself included, believed Turbine picked Coast City as a compromise of both worlds instead of popularity.

Honestly, my interest waned when Gotham Heights was shut down over Coast City for its official release. I hated jungling, especially trying to gank the short top lane, doing the laning phase. Gotham Heights was pure action, with a capture and control style that I did admire. Too bad that map, and the game, is gone.

  9. SpidErickTehDarkAndStuff says:

i knew about this game because one of my friends used to play it
oh well i shouldve given it a try back then

  10. Kyle Netherwood says:

I love all the fitting names. The game was in infinite crisis, the stolen powers mechanic was taken from another game, and the Gotham Divided map divided the community.

  11. MrMaltasar says:

I had forgotten about this game. I loved it. Played it from release until its death. Really fun and the multiverse stuff was pretty cool, as a lot of thought was put into their champions.

  12. Daniel Jacks says:

The heavy focus on esports reminds of of heroes of the storm. I loved that game as the smash ultimate of blizzard, I never really cared about the competitive scene.

  13. arkkk1294 says:

Man I used to live this game, but yea…all valid points. Just poor marketing, no faith in the product and very little innovation.

  14. Myo H says:

Thats what happened when a company make a MOBA from well known characters to squeeze out money from audience. Create something new better than MOBA, cuz that game genere is full of flopped games.

  15. Toni Serra says:

the game was simply very ugly and the animations were very outdated for its time. It was simply not smooth and pleasent experience enough to spend the hours it would have required to master it. I had high hopes for this one. Oh well, back to lol i guess

  16. Andrew Gef says:

This game had no marketing, I remember constantly looking for new mobas back in the day and stumbled upon this hidden gem, this game was sooooo fun really hoping for a reboot

  17. Toy Battle says:

They need to bring this game out I love this game I played with The Gaslight Joker meat cleaver and healed when he attacked it was crazy if a developer see this please bring this game back I feel like if they had better developers then it has been a long lasting game just like League of Legends

  18. Phil says:

I dunno why I randomly remembered this game. I remember being in the beta, being sooo juiced but dropping it after about a month.

  19. s00kie says:

During the time this game was out, dominion was still played. The decision to make a dominion map was because it was still building up the game. People stopped playing dominion because Riot never balaced it or made any changes to it, kinda like the 3v3 map. I had no problem with the roster either. We got OG Batman, Flash and Superman… tbh the game failed because they focused and expended too much money in the esport scene. The game comes first, then the esport scene comes later, not backwards. I loved this game and I was never a true DC fan… when I finally got a good pc to play it it shut down. I remember that Gaslight Batman was my fav character. It played kinda like Ezreal and both magic and ad builds worked on him.. 🙁
